The movie does, however, treat the South with a fair amount of respect. ![]() That’s not to say that this movie doesn’t completely avoid all Southern stereotypes. Viewers, however, who would rather see a charming, cute love story that debunks some Southern stereotypes might just want to check this movie out. Viewers expecting a laugh-out-loud comedy should stay home. SWEET HOME ALABAMA is more interested in telling the story of how Melanie regains her Southern roots than it is in generating lots of big laughs. The story shows, however, that you can take the girl out of the South, but you can’t take the South out of the girl. It becomes clear through the telling of this story that Melanie is ashamed of her Southern, working class roots. Comical complications ensue, especially when Andrew decides he’s going to make a surprise visit to Melanie at the Southern mansion that Melanie claimed as her family home. Melanie decides to take some drastic actions to force Jake’s hand. Her quiet return turns into another loud argument with Jake. Lynyrd Skynyrd’s famous rock anthem, “Sweet Home Alabama,” is a jaunty, defiant reply to Neil Young’s politically correct diatribe against the American South, “Southern Man.” Featuring such lyrics as, “Now, Watergate does not bother me does your conscience bother you, tell me true,” Skynyrd’s defiant anthem is so catchy that it makes one ashamed of liking Neil Young’s angry protest song. It is so fun, so full of genial and amusing characters, excellent acting and an excellent ending. The humor is lifting the story to a little more than just good. In fact, if the movie hadn't humor, it had been falling apart. The concept and plot is very smart, when the tone is told with humour even in situations that are serious. Then she says yes, but she has things to make up and decides to go down to her hometown in Alabama to get a divorce from her husband who she hasn't met for years, not after she lost her child and he was drunk on their wedding. It begins with that Melanie is asked by the son of the mayor if she wants to marry him. Yet there are a part sadness in the story. I think what makes this movie good is that it is a story you can relate to, but made with humor. I am glad I didn't listen to critics and watched this movie! It is a very good movie with charm, humor, sadness and most of all, genial acting! Reese Witherspoon and Josh Lucas are the two characters that you can relate to. ![]()
